The Verge has !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the benefits of using simulators in driver's education. I think it's a great idea which is showing positive results: in Georgia, a statewide decline in young driver deaths of 60%.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
There was one particular comment in the article that caught my attention:
"As a society we need to be doing a much better job in driver education. What we're doing now is a joke. If the number of people lost from car crashes were lost from flying, it would equate to an airliner crashing nearly every day with no survivors. We wouldn't accept that in aviation. But as a society we accept it with driving."
I know I'll be adding simulators to the list of driver education tools for when my children get older.
And, rather shamelessly, I'll try to use this information to convince my wife that a wheel and pedal set for the PS3 is in reality a good thing.

Seat out of a Silverado with the dash from a G6. GM must've donated that.

I totally agree. Not to toot my own horn, but a decade and a half of racing sims have definitely helped my real life driving skills. And there was that kid who won that Gran Turismo contest with the kid who's driving LMP1 cars now. There's definitely a translation. Would help a ton with driver's ed... much safer and cheaper than the real thing with not much lost.

Got 3 wheels in my room for simulation purposes. I am that big of a car sim nerd. While I wasn't allowed to drive when I was 16, I did simulations instead, and I feel ready for my full test, which I'm taking soon.

I strongly believe all the racing and driving simulators I've used helped me with my driving. The same day that I first drove a car in real life, I got to drive a 2 or 3 mile trip home, complete with pedestrians and traffic, etc. I even heard my parents say that I "must have done this before."
